Book bonanza adds excitement to Bendigo festival

THE book fair has been part of the Bendigo Easter Festival for 35 years.

Y Service Club’s secretary Peter Unmack came up with the idea for the fair on an overseas trip to America.

“I saw a similar fair operating in California when I was over there in 1978,” he said.

“And I thought to myself that it was something we could do in Bendigo.”

Mr Unmack said the first year the fair had run it only attracted a small number of people but had since grown.

“On Friday morning we had people lined up all along the street waiting to get in,” he said.

“It has become some people’s tradition to come to the fair each Easter.” Mr Unmack said all of the books were donated and the money from the fair would go back into the community.

For the past five years Peter Grace and his children Emmaby, 13, Patrick, 11 and Alastair, 7 have visited the book fair.

“We really love coming here,” Mr Grace said.

“There is a great variety of books and the price is right.”

Emmaby said she always stocked up on books when she went to the fair.

“I like reading and the books are cheap,” she said.

The book fair is on today from 9am at the Tom Tweed YMCA Stadium in Mundy street.
